Contaminated Land and Groundwater Assessments
The groundwater protection policies of the Environment Agency require contamination to be assessed and containment or remedial plans to be developed. Similarly, more and more planning applications are subject to conditions requiring assessments. Contamination caused by current uses and spillages also require assessment.
Failure to carry out assessments can lead to delays in attaining permissions and authorisations, wastage of money on ineffective treatments and, in extreme cases, prosecution for ‘knowingly permitting’ pollution to continue unchecked.
Whether your concerns are over a recent spillage, historic use of your site, or a planning proposal, Peak offer cost effective assessments of pollution levels and remediation or containment options.
Many techniques for containing or treating contamination now exist and our independence from the major remediation and engineering companies means that we are free to offer the best advice on your system. Our staff’s background means we can also advise on the legal status of the contamination. This latter point is often crucial to planning expenditure. |

Contaminated Land and Remediation Services
The UK Government has published model procedures for the management of Land Contamination (Contaminated Land Report CLR11, Defra & Environment Agency 2004). Peak Associates advise that these procedures are adopted in relation to remediation of all sites, particularly larger more complex sites.
Peak Associates offer the following remediation services in line with CLR11:-
• Desktop study and Intrusive Investigation
• Site Specific Quantitative Risk Assessment to derive remedial targets
• Remediation Options Appraisal
• Remediation Strategy Development
• Preparation of Implementation Plan
• Remediation Specifications Development
• Remediation Tender Preparation
• Supervision of Remediation Contracts
• Remediation Works Verification
• Regulatory Liaison Throughout
• Assistance with obtaining Regulatory Permits. |

Geo-environmental and Geotechnical Services
Our Geo-environmental Studies services provide developers and land owners with a detailed assessment of the ground conditions in relation to both contamination and the engineering properties of the soils. The aim of our Geo-environmental investigation interpretative reports is to provide the Client with advice on how to deal with key constraints to development arising from the ground conditions prevalent beneath sites.
Our standard Geo-environment reports specifically discuss remediation options and offer geotechnical advice in relation to foundation and floor slabs design, drainage, road pavements, slope stability, retaining structures, gas protection requirements and waste disposal.
We can also offer detailed site specific Quantitative Risk Assessments in relation to controlled waters and human health, to derive remedial targets. In summary, our Geo-Environmental Services package includes:-
• Phase 1 Desktop studies and development of conceptual site ground model
• Phase 2 intrusive investigations including an interpretative report preparation (environmental and geotechnical),
• Detailed site specific Quantitative Risk Assessment
• Remediation options appraisal and remediation specification production and remedial works validation.
• Remedial works validation. |

Contractor Management
Environmental Improvement Programmes frequently involve either modifications to a site drainage system or the installation of containment and/or treatment systems. This will necessitate a period of time when contractors will be on site to carry out remedial measures which can include drain tracing and clearance work, re-routing drains and the installation or improvements to existing site sewage treatment works, septic tanks, grease traps, effluent pits, etc.
At Peak we have the expertise not only to identify your needs for such requirements but also to supervise contractors and ensure that such procedures are carried out thoroughly and in accordance with the requirements of the regulatory authorities.
We would also check that any installations carry out the function required to meet with the needs of your site. This may involve some post-installation monitoring of effluent quality. We would also be able to contact a number of different contractors on your behalf to ensure that you get the best value for money for the work that is required. We will generally try to use local businesses to minimise the costs involved. |
